The joints have been conceived of to produce a much more smooth and natural look than those of mortise and tenon joinery. Though any individual joint may arguably not be as strong as one the more traditional types, the manner in which they are used cause the pieces to act both as bracing and  structural elements. Also, the fact that the pieces connect at varying angles and positions makes the overall piece extremely strong and durable.
